30th Pasalamat Festival Tops Cultural Fete

La Carlota City Celebrated the 30th Pasalamat Festival, April 27 – May 3, 2009 with a theme “Unity In Crisis Welcome Opportunities” for the week – long affair that included cultural shows, talent contests, natives games, the traditional cockfighting and agricultural and garden exhibits, rhythm contest, street dancing, the pawasak, and the search for and crowning of the new Pasalamat Queen.
The festivity was ushered in by a religious ritual and the lighting on April 27, of the festival park. Guests and dignitaries included 4th Dist. Cong. Jeffrey P. Ferrer and wife Atty. Juliet Marie D. Ferrer, Gov. Isidro P. Zayco, Board Member Jose Benito A. Alonso, Mayors Jilson D. Tubillara – San Enrique, and Jose Maria A. Alonso – Pontevedra, Inday Julie C. Benedicto, Robert and Kitchie B. Paulino, Mrs. Lydia P. Ferrer, and Pasalamat Foundation, Inc. President Bob J. Cuenca and wife Agnes.
Other quests were Eduardo Concepcion –CAC Res. Mgr. Diony Caspe and CAC personnel, barangay officials, Atty. Ike Barredo, Gerard Tupas, Julius Asistio, Katrina and Margaret Rubin.
They were welcomed by Mayor Demie John C. Honrado and wife Donna, Vice Mayor David T. Baga, Jr. and spouse Dorle. SP member Circiaco D. Sia, Jr. opened the program with a welcome remarks, capped by words of inspiration from Gov. Zayco.
The highly anticipated event, the Search for the Pasalamat Festival Queen was held on the night of May 2. Rains soaked the original venue during the day, but the producers of the event, the technical crew and propsmen were able to move the materials and equipment to set up a new stage at the multi-purpose gymnasium for the evening show.
Ma. Jimmyl Garilao, a 17 year-old resident of Brgy. III which she aptly represented, romped off with the Pasalamat Festival Queen 2009 crown, besting 21 other beautiful and glamorous young ladies vying for the coveted title. She also received nine special awards as Ms. GSM Blue, Ms. New Placenta Beauty, Ms. Globe Telecom, Ms. Miracle Plus Capsule, Ms. Protec Cee, Best in evening gown, Ms. Sunsilk, Miss Photogenic, and Best in swimsuit. Complementing her plum prize of P20,000.00 was an all-expenses-paid stay for two nights at the Pearl Manor Hotel, Bacolod City. The awards presentors were Cong. Jeffrey P. Ferrer and Atty. Juliet Marie D. Ferrer, Director Fritz Ynfante, Mayor Demie John C. Honrado and Jay Ann L. Empleo, 2008 Pasalmat Queen title holder. Her top prize was P25,000.00.
First runner-up was Zarah Jane Aplasca, 20 who bannered Brgy. Yubo and the Associacion de Agricultores de La Carlota Y. Pontevedra, Inc. She received various awards from several sponsors including a cash prize of P20,000.00 awarded by Usec Bernardino Sayo and VM David T. Baga, Jr.
The candidate of Brgy. II, 18 years old Aida Marie Enuslay placed second runner-up. Her cash prize of P15,000.00, aside from gifts from the various sponsors, was donated by Congresswoman Mary Mitzi Cajuyon, and presented by SPM Luis J. Jalandoni III and Jennifer Barrientos, Binibining Pilipinas – Universe 2009.
The rituals and offerings were participated in by SPMs Luis J. Jalandoni III – Blessing of Fire, Rosalinda L. Aguirre – Blessing of Money, Rex R. Jalando-on – blessing of Water, Julian M. Chiang – Blessing of Soil, Zaldy C. Pernito – Blessing of Fruits, Ruel G. Alvañez – Blessing of Goods, Jose Luis Miguel Solomon C. Sicangco IV – Blessing of Kindness, Jeffrey E. Rumbines – Blessing of Harmony, Jose Leonel G. Bugante – Blessing of Peace, Erwin B. Ponce, Jr. – blessing of Youth, and Jacob E. Liansing – Blessing of Harvest.
Mayor Honrado gave the thanksgiving message who then declared the Pasalamat Cultural and Arts Festival ’09 open. With the reverberating beat of the Pasalamat drummers the opening ceremony was highlighted by a fireworks display, and later followed by a dance and jam party with the 6 Cycle Mind and the 4.0 Version hit bands on stage.
The Awit-Sayaw Season VI grand finals was held April 30 at the new La Carlota Multi-Purpose Gymnasium.
Winners for the Bulilit Category (Awit) were Keith Princess Jover – Champion, Remy Garcia – first runner-up and Stella Maris A. Jaudines – 2nd runner-up. In the Adult Category the top artists were Sheila Depedro – champion, Tiffany Grace Gonzales – first runner-up, and Jessa Garcia – 2nd runner-up.
The judges were Nonoy Sionosa, Ms. Doreen Dofitas, Cesar Reynon, Ms Christine Rosales, singer Victor Wood and Ms. Shirley Fuentes. Hosts were DJs Rico and Sofia of 101.5 MOR for Life-Bacolod.
The champion for the Hataw sa Galaw was the CJ Crew dancers, followed by the 3 G’s and the Top Mix group who were second and third placers, respectively. There was also the trisikad race that drew 33 bikers. A brand new trisikad plus gift packs was the top prize.
A jampacked crowd witnessed the drumbeating tribes showcased their talents under two categories: adult, 16 tribes; and 8-12 years old elementary level which had six contestants. The winners were Brgy. 1-champion, Brgy.III-second and Brgy. II-third for Category A; and for Category B Tribu Norte – Champion, South 1 – 1st runner-up, and RSB Elem. School-2nd runner-up.
Summing up the impact of the festivities, Mayor Honrado said that the very unique talents, skilss, character, training and abilities of every La Carloteños made the Pasalamat Festival a legacy and the locality an investor-friendly city.---JDC, PNDL.
